USU is currently helping to care for three orphaned bear cubs – two of which were found near the Book Cliffs area, and one of which was found around the Manti Mountain Range. The cubs are being rehabilitated at the USDA-Wildlife Services-Predator Research Facility in Millville, as a part of a conjoined effort from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the United States Department of Agriculture, and Utah State University – which began about eight years ago. Orphaned cubs are kept at the facility until they are ready for release in the fall, in order to explore and find a den to hibernate for the winter. During the rehab process, special precautions are taken so they remain “wild". |
